Welcome to Class 5
Autumn Term 2019
I would like to take this opportunity to send a big welcome back to all the children in class 5 after their lovely summer break. We are now ready to get stuck in to our learning, which will be full of fun and interesting lessons, this term.
In Maths, we will be covering all the basics of calculation and place value, which will allow us to make good progress throughout the rest of the year. Homework will be on a Tuesday and Fridays with Tuesday’s homework due on the Friday and Fridays due the following Tuesday – if you have any queries about homework; please pop a note in your child’s reading record/homework diary or drop in to see me.
We will be looking at a variety of texts in literacy with ‘The Highwayman’ being our first – a new text for both myself and the class. We will move on to study the work of Shakespeare and another new text called ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ about a little boy who has been displaced from his home country. Weekly spellings will also be sent home for the children to learn alongside their regular reading.
In the autumn term we will be studying local history as our main topic with a link to some geography work on The River Eden and art-work by several local artists. This is an ideal topic to get us out into the community for visits and hopefully have local visitors in to talk to the children too. Our science work will look at forces first of all so there is plenty of opportunity for practical work and investigations. We will be working in an interesting and open-ended manner, which will allow the children to follow their own interests whilst still meeting the needs of the national curriculum. We will also be working with a D&T Teacher from Ullswater Community College on a project relating to textiles and fabric dying.
Our Year 6 children will also be offered the opportunity to become buddies for children with additional needs. This is a great responsibility for the children and encourages a caring and mature attitude – The children love it too!
