In Maths, we will begin the year by revisiting and securing the important foundations of place value and calculation. These skills are essential for children to make good progress as they move through Year 4 and Year 5.

We would really appreciate your support in practising times tables regularly at home with your child. Little and often is often the most effective approach!

We will continue to use White Rose Maths resources to help children develop their mathematical understanding, make connections between different areas of maths and become confident, independent mathematicians.

In English, we will be developing our writing skills through a range of fiction and non-fiction units. Our focus will be on expanding vocabulary, using punctuation for effect, and structuring our writing for clarity and impact. 

In English, we will be exploring a variety of engaging texts and using these as a starting point for our reading, writing and vocabulary work. We will encourage the children to develop their comprehension skills, broaden their vocabulary and become increasingly confident and creative writers.

We want children to develop a real love of reading, and regular reading at home continues to be an important part of their learning. Please encourage your child to read regularly and talk to them about what they have read.

During the Autumn Term, we will be studying Ancient Greece. We have lots of exciting and practical learning activities planned, giving children opportunities to explore Greek life, culture, mythology and its influence on the world today.

In Science, we will begin by investigating Light and how we see things. This topic provides lots of opportunities for practical investigations and hands-on learning.

Across the curriculum, we will aim to provide children with opportunities to ask questions, investigate, solve problems and follow their own interests while continuing to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Alongside their academic learning, we are keen for our Year 4 and 5 children to develop their confidence, independence and sense of responsibility.

This year, we are particularly excited to extend our buddying system to include Year 5 children, alongside our Year 4 children. This will give our older children opportunities to support children with additional needs across the school.

We feel this is an incredibly valuable experience for all the children involved. Our children have the opportunity to develop empathy, patience, communication skills, leadership and responsibility, while the children they support benefit from positive relationships, encouragement and having a trusted peer to help them feel included and confident.

There will also be opportunities for children to take on other responsibilities around school, helping them to become positive role models and valued members of our school community.
