Happy New Year!
Year 6 is a very important year for our children as it's their last year before moving on to secondary school. Our aim is to ensure that they leave us as independent, responsible young people with lots to offer the world. In Year 6, we continue to offer a broad and balanced curriculum and don't narrow down what we do in order to focus solely on English and Maths (although we still do plenty!).
In the spring term we will be learning about Australia in our topic and aim to extend children’s geographical skills as well as their skills in writing non-fiction genres, using data to spot trends and maybe following areas of their own interest such as nature, sport or famous people. In Science we will be studying a topic on ‘Earth in Space’ before moving on the classifying animals which links really well with our Australia topic. We will be working in a varied and open-ended manner which will allow the children to follow their own interests whilst still meeting the requirements of the new National Curriculum.
We will continue to work hard in English and Maths as we prepare for the Year 6 SATs – we will be focussing on spelling, punctuation and grammar in order to succeed in that element as well as other more general areas and in maths it will be times tables, calculation and with a real focus on problem solving this term too. Children will receive spelling homework on a Wednesday and Maths homework on Tuesdays and Fridays.
